Meet Bjorn.

Originally rescued from PG County's euthanasia list, he was in foster for 10 months. After two failed attempts at moving fosters, we had no choice but to place him in boarding. A foster stepped up in November to temp-foster him on weekends, and again over Christmas.

Now she's fallen in love and is fostering Bjorn until June with a dedication to getting him on track.

Training. Structure. Behavior modification medication. Everything a rescue dreams of in a foster.

But the cost of boarding plus weekly training since his fosters have had him until June will be more than $8,000.

Bjorn is just *one* example of the dogs we're saving at Laila's Legacy.

Our reality is that yes, it’s really the urgent: Adoptions are down.
Fosters aren't stepping up for animals in care.
The number of animals facing homelessness are increasing.
Medical costs continue to rise.

Did you know one of the best ways you can help the animal welfare crisis happening right now is to sign up as a foster? 💭

Rescue organizations like Laila’s Legacy can’t function without fosters. Shelters, even with their kenneling space, are inundated right now and rely on rescues to help by pulling animals in so the shelter can prevent spiking euthanasia numbers.

We started Laila’s Legacy to save dogs like Laila - large and bully breed dogs, misunderstood, in overcrowded shelters - and cats from inundated shelters.

Rescues like ours do not have shelter facilities though so we can’t help shelter partner’s over capacity issue without fosters!

It’s all a trickle down effect! 💦

“But what about boarding??” Many organizations in the DMV region and all over the US, rely on boarding partners to house dogs they struggle to place and in emergencies. In our case, we’re so lucky to have a partner with Pet Dominion. But… it takes so long to find fosters for animals placed in boarding because of misconceptions around the need to foster those animals. For example, Rye and LB are the last two we have there and have been waiting for months - years. The pushback we hear most? “Well they’re safe there! So I’ll go focus elsewhere”. Yes, they’re happy and healthy and given so much love but it’s not a foster home. And so, we cannot use boarding as a go between.

We must find fosters for the animal’s sake.

Before you swipe…. YES - you too can foster!

❌You don’t need experience.
❌You don’t need “the perfect set up”.
❌You don’t have to work from home.
❌You don’t have to be retired.
❌You don’t have to have an empty home.

Truly anyone can foster.

⭐️ Food, meds and vaccines, training, and other supplies are all covered by the org or donors. Mileage or other supplies provided by you as the foster can be written off at tax season as well!

Jackson’s big head is full of thoughts of finding his forever home! He’s a big, lovable mush who adores his humans and cuddling. He’s living in the city currently so a good fit for anyone not ready to head out to the burbs or doesn’t have a yard. He can live with dogs too ✨

He also needs a temp foster the 18-23rd and makes for a great house guest! You could have a big lovable hippo to keep you company over St. Patrick’s day weekend 🍀

We need your help! 🚨

Bjorn had a temp-foster break for about a month with an incredible family who absolutely adored him. Unfortunately, due to their set up & schedules they are not able to foster dogs long term. Even with almost daily emails, personal asks, and paid ads on various platforms/google we couldn't find another foster for Bjorn and he was dropped back off at boarding middle of last week.

They called us today with the bad news that Bjorn can no longer stay in boarding. Unlike before, he's struggled immensely since coming back and he needs to go back to a foster home ASAP. To be clear, we would not euthanize him because of this notice but we do have to get him into a foster home ASAP!

We have slowly gotten dogs out of boarding thanks to each of you all. Sharing, posting, people signing up to temp foster - and in a few cases long term foster - is the only way we have been successful. Furthermore, our temp-foster program has proven that these dogs can live in homes, Bjorn especially. They are just constantly overlooked because of a misconception that being in boarding means they don't need a foster. Just because they won't be euthanized for space, doesn't mean they're any less deserving of a foster home!

This is where each of you come in! We are committed to helping Bjorn. But in the same way we've asked for help in fundraising efforts, we need our community's help to reach as many humans as possible and find fosters for Bjorn and all our boarding dogs. We can't do this without you!

While they have dogs that required separation and busy work schedules, they opened their heart and home to fostering her. Can you help us find a long-term foster?

Her temp fosters absolutely adore her and shared the following:

“She’s doing great! She is completely treat motivated! We eat dinner from a towel to give her some stimulation and she’s taking a liking to it. She can sit for her meals and knows “eat” so she’s responsive to those commands. She’s a little of a counter surfer, but she’s tall! She does great around (foster dad)! With the snow we haven’t been out on walks so I can’t speak to that just yet but she is extremely well potty trained! And so far zero accidents even on our long days/nights recently.

She’s so amazing! I wish my immediate circle needed a new dog, she would make such an amazing energetic pal. ❤️”

We couldn’t have said it better. We know there’s a home out there that will work for her! Every single foster who’s ever cared for Chelsea says how amazing, quiet, and what a great pal she is!

We are so sad to share the location we booked for our Caregiver Support group had some unexpected construction today so we have to delay our first session!

BUT - we are taking this as an opportunity to collect your feedback so we can make this as successful as possible! Leave a comment with your ideas & thoughts! 💭

As a reminder... our goal is to create a safe space for those caring for behaviorally or medically challenged dogs & cats! We know that many in Laila’s Legacy’s network - adopter, foster, supporter - care for behaviorally and medically challenged cats & dogs. It’s a hard task, and often can be isolating, so the goal is to create community within the space!

⛈️ Stormy - This little love bug would love to spend the holidays with you! Stormy is potty trained and fine with being left alone. She is good with kids and loves to go on walks. In the house she loves to snuggle but is also good at entertaining herself with stuffed toys.

🌹 Rosie – Rosie is a shy girl that needs time to get to know her humans. She would do best in a quieter neighborhood and home.

COVERED! 🤩 Spike - This senior citizen is known for his spiciness! While he wants your attention, if you pet him too long or surprise him, he will try to bite. Luckily he only has 3.5 teeth so no damages occur!

🥭 Mango - This energetic pup loves her humans, is potty trained, and crate trained. Mango does best as an only dog. She is really smart and sweet.

COVERED 🤩 Hera - This girl may be small but makes up for it in energy. Hera is the best of both worlds and is always ready to play but also enjoys snuggling with her person. Hera is crate trained and would love to show you her skills as well as continuing to learn new skills. Requires a house with no cats and would do best as an only dog.

Why are we trying to extend, you ask? This year has been tough for every rescue organization, Laila's Legacy included. The layoffs & job losses in the DMV region along with economic instability across the nation has impacted many pet owners and animal lovers in the area. We along with shelters & rescues all over the region are seeing skyrocketing numbers of owner surrenders due to eviction or job loss and donors are more hesitant to sign up for monthly donations to focus on saving for emergencies. Combined with record low adoption and foster sign ups it makes it harder and harder to say, “yes” when we're asked to help!

We receive more shelter over-capacity pleas and owner surrender and support emails than ever. Giving Tuesday funding offers us the cushion to say “yes”. To say “yes” to saving lives from shelters, supporting our shelter partners, and supporting our community!

Sweet Mango needs a temp foster for just a few days, the 11/25-12/1! This is a perfect opportunity for anyone staying in town or someone who normally can’t foster because of work to temp foster!

Mango needs to be the only pup in the home and a foster without kiddos but is a ball of love, loves to cuddle and play, and is potty and crate trained!

This amazing community stepped up and helped us find not one, but TWO fosters for Lil’ Lucy, can anyone step up for Mango so she has a soft place to land? Don’t we all deserve a home for the holidays? 🥺

Lil’ Lucy’s adopter informed us over the weekend she might be evicted on Thursday and would need to return her to our care if so. We got confirmation yesterday she is being evicted and the only option is her parents home who cannot allow dogs.

We need a foster to step up ASAP so we can take her back into care. Can you help? ‼️

Lil’ Lucy is reportedly good with other and humans, albeit shy at first. We can provide all supplies as needed!
